MDMA and Psilocybin Treatments with Professor Susan Rossell (Swinburne University)
From July 1st 2023, Australia has legalised the prescription of MDMA and psilocybin as treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and treatment-resistant depression.
Professor Susan Rossell from Swinburne University, is one of the key voices calling for caution, arguing that the approval process was rushed and did not examine sufficient clinical trial data.
An additional concern is the prohibitive expense of the treatments, and the lack of recognised training for professionals in this area.
We recently had the opportunity to speak with Professor Rossell about her involvement in Australia’s only clinical trial testing the viability of psychedelics as a medical treatment.
“We need to really understand who to predict will benefit from this treatment and we just don’t have the data for that.”
